Portfolio Company Services Case Studies

Huron Consulting Group was founded in 2002 with more than 150 former Arthur Andersen consultants, who needed to be "back in business" within 60 days. The Lake PCS team:

  • Set up the Huron consultants in five offices across the country with everything from "carpeting to computers."
  • With management's feedback, identified and hired key administrative executives, including a CFO, VP of HR, and General Counsel, among others.
  • Oversaw the implementation of all back-office systems, including payroll, and a 401(k) and employee stock option plan.
  • Worked with management to launch this group of consultants successfully under a new identity.

Driveline Retail, formerly Storecast Merchandising Corporation, is a leading provider of merchandising services to national retailers and major consumer products manufacturers. With four acquisitions since Lake's initial investment in a family company with little support infrastructure, Driveline has grown to 10,000 employees servicing 42,000 locations. The Lake PCS Team handled:

  • A benefits/compensation consolidation initiative that reduced costs by approximately $900,000.
  • Designed and implemented a drug testing policy, launched an HR best practices initiative, and provided dedicated HR assistance until PCS successfully recruited HR personnel.
  • Hired a CFO and brought all operations on to a single, integrated back-office system.
  • Helped with the rebranding of the company and its relaunch in the marketplace.

Archstone Consulting, an independent business strategy and operations consulting firm, was formed as a start-up with a group of senior consultants from leading strategy firms. Similar to Huron Consulting Group, personnel had to be set up in offices - four were set up nationally - and administrative infrastructure had to be put in place, including complete systems and senior administrative executives. In addition, the Lake Team helped:

  • "Launch" Archstone in the marketplace to establish credibility and attract clients and staff. PCS identified a PR boutique that could provide senior-level consulting with market-competitive pricing and ongoing attention from the firm's founder and senior staff. Through the PR firm's efforts, Archstone was able to present its business to the marketplace with a full-page article in Fortune, among other press.
  • One international acquisition was completed and two offices were opened in Europe.
